Harry worked in the coalmines for 38 years; with the closure of Zollverein in 1986, Harry retired. But the memories - and a raspy cough - remain.

Education is... photo exhibit

I produced the exhibit in cooperation with the release of The Educational Report Ruhr in Mülheim, Germany. In the report academics from the region advise how education can be reformed, and I found it important to engage those directly affected - the students. This project put the dialogue literally into the pupils’ hands. (In German.)

"Education is life!" For this exhibit I visited five different schools throughout the region and asked 60 pupils to define what education is.

"Education is communication: Turkish - German." The exhibit highlighted pupils from different cities and different forms of schooling.

Education is the first step on the stairway of life.

"Education is our next generation." Just as the opinions were diverse, I intentionally sought out a broad spectrum of schools and personal backgrounds.

"Education is unfortunately unfair." I asked students to be honest, and I assured them their opinions would be not be censored.
